I like to sketch the gulls and waterfowl that frequent a beach on a little lake near my daughter's school. One day, I was excited to find this relative rarity loafing on the sand. It was a gray day, with wind and a little spitting rain, and I appreciated the car's roof over my head. The Merganser had no such shelter, though, and the wind ruffled his wispy head plumes as he preened his feathers.
